Alabama's Huntsville -- founded by Hawkins County's first sheriff, John Hunt, as a trading center eventually pivotal to Big Cotton -- continues reign as a focal point for retail trade of modern-day variety. Historic downtown serves as a magnet with Harrison Brothers Hardware Store -- Alabama's oldest operating hardware now owned and run by the Historic Huntsville Foundation -- filled with nostalgia, gadgets, and handicrafts. Railroad Antique Mall, Artistic Images Gallery and assorted shops also dot downtown, along with the Huntsville Hilton, the exclusive Heritage Club, 801 Franklin, and several other upscale eateries and nightspots. Madison Square Mall, among the region's largest retail complexes, is anchored by Parisian, Dillard's, McRae's, JCPenney and Sears, with 120 specialty shops including Gap, Disney Store, Victoria's Secret, Eddie Bauer, Gymboree, Bombay, and KB Toys, plus the Garden Food Court, a 12-theater movie complex, and an arcade. Surrounding area stores include Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Old Navy, and Circuit City.
Super Wal-Mart and several car dealerships are to the west. In southeast Huntsville, Valley Bend at Jones Farm, at Carl T. Jones Drive and Four Mile Post Road, is anchored by SuperTarget, with other stores including Famous Footwear, Ross, Barnes & Noble, Marshall's and Party City. Parkway Place Mall, anchored by Parisian and Dillard's, features 70 stores including Banana Republic, Abercrombie & Fitch, Williams-Sonoma and all of the GAP concepts. North Memorial Parkway has the Fountain, with Home Depot, Costco, and a nearby Sam's Wholesale Club, Toys 'R' Us, and Books-A-Million. South Memorial Parkway is home to Lowe's, Hobby Lobby, Ethan Allen, Radisson Hotel, and several shopping complexes. Wal-Mart, K-mart, Hancock Fabrics, Big Lots, Office Furniture Outlet and fast-food restaurants and grocery stores anchor the area's north and south ends. The University Drive stretch, from Memorial Parkway west to the Madison Square Mall area, offers shopping and dining choices, including Office Depot, Pier 1, and Rhodes Furniture, plus O'Charley's, Shogun, Olive Garden and Hooters.
